  • Cyprus is the 3rd largest and 3rd most populous island in the Mediterranean and the world's 81st largest island by area
  • The area of Cyprus is 9,251 km² of which 5,896 km2 are under the control of the Republic of Cyprus and of which 3,355 km2 are under the administration of the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.


     
  • Turkey invaded Cyprus in two phases 20-22 July, and 14-16 August 1974
  • Turkish troops eventually occupied 37% of the island's territory
  • The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC
  • The population of the island is 940,100 according to the latest official count (2015), out of:  
    - 74.5% are Greek Cypriots (701.000)
    - 15.7% are foreign residents (147,300) and 
    - 9.8% are Turkish Cypriots (91.800)

  • January 1st, 2008 the Republic of Cyprus joined the Eurosystem and in so doing introduced the Euro as its official currency.
