Terra Santa

Terra Santa

The Latin Catholic church of Cyprus

Terra Santa, or else, Santa Maria delle Grazie (St Mary of Graces) is the church of the Latin community of Larnaca. It is located in the north-eastern district of Larnaka and consists of a rather imposing monument of the Catholic Church of the Farnciscan Fraternity.

Terra Santa and the convent were founded by the Franciscan monk Callixte Martel in 1596. The main purpose of them was to host Latin pilgrims who were visiting the nearby Holy Land. The church became unsuitable for worship, so it was demolished and rebuilt in 1724 by a larger church and convent. About a century afterwards, today’s church, was erected in 1842. It took six years for today’s Terra Santa to be built, and the foundation stone was blessed on Sunday 10th July 1842, in the presence of the Diplomatic Corps then established in Larnaka.

Terra Santa is built in the shape of the Latin cross and combines Renaissance and Baroque characteristics. It has three narthexes,a dome and peristyle built-in its face. The architect of Terra Santa, the Franciscan Brother Serafino Da Roccascelima, was inspired by the ecclesiastical architectural art of Southern Italy of the 17th and 18th centuries. It is unquestionably an architectural landmark in the heart of Larnaka, with an impressive interior, a vaulted ceiling and a marble bust made in Tuscany, Italy.

In the adjacent convent of Terra Santa there are six nuns of Italian origin, who have a long tradition of philanthropic services to the community of Larnaca. They also run an old peoples home in the large compound of the church.
