Olive oil: this is why its price has soared

Olive oil: this is why its price has soared

Recently we have all noticed an increase in the price of olive oil, which is anything but negligible. Below we will see the reasons why this has happened but we will also explain some of the reasons why it is necessary for our daily diet.

  •    The main countries in the production of olive oil are Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Spain etc. In fact, Cypriot extra virgin olive oil has received excellent reviews. Apart from the tourism sector, which has recently been much discussed due to a lack of human resources, agricultural production is also lagging behind in finding workers mainly for olive picking. The result of this is reduced production and, by extension, an increase in prices.
  •    The second and most important factor in the increase in the price of olive oil is the environmental disasters that hit the Mediterranean, especially Greece. The fires as well as the deadly floods due to the Daniel factor as you all have heard, destroyed many areas that produced olive oil such as Thessaly.
  •    Finally, due to inflation, which we have all noticed, the production cost of olive oil has increased and therefore its price.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL

Olive oil is an essential component of the Mediterranean diet, a diet known for its protective effect on human well-being. Research into the active ingredients of olive oil, such as eleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, has shown positive effects on various diseases. More specifically in breast cancer, ovarian cancer, postmenopausal osteoporosis and other diseases. The health claims attributed to olive oil are specifically related to the intake of extra virgin olive oil due to its high nutritional quality and multiple positive health effects. Mediterranean diets have been shown to have indirect effects on the immune system and inflammatory responses.
Polyphenols, present in olives, are natural compounds of various chemical structures and are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, herbs, whole grain products, processed foods (dark chocolate), as well as in tea, coffee and red wine.
